This is a vintage men's gold dress wristwatch, probably from the 1940's, perhaps earlier, with unique and beautiful hinged lugs.

Manufactured in Switzerland it features a large 10 RGP
19.8 mm X 0.78" square case, excluding crown lugs that surrounds a evenly aged, 2-tone gold dial complimented by gold hour and minute hands, raised gold Art deco numbers, and black outer chapter, all under a clear, bright new acrylic crystal.

The 15 jewel 17 jewel Swiss movement sets and winds as it should, is running well, and keeping very good time.

It has a stainless steel, snap-down back, and has been paired with a new, black, embossed genuine leather 16 mm strap with gold buckle which suits it perfectly.

Please note: While the pictures may seem a bit strange, the unusual hinged swing lugs contour comfortably and stylishly to the wrist when worn.

    ABOUT THE BRAND:

    Founding and Early Years

    Establishment:

Wittnauer was founded in 1885 in New Rochelle, New York, by Albert Wittnauer, who immigrated from Switzerland. He initially worked for his brother-in-law, Eugene Robert, who imported Swiss watches.

Recognizing a market for affordable Swiss-made watches in America, Wittnauer began developing his own line of watches in 1880.

Company Growth: In 1888, Albert took over Robert's company and renamed it the A. Wittnauer Company.

The company quickly gained a reputation for producing reliable timepieces, catering to both scientific and private exploration needs, and became involved with the U.S. Navy for early aviation and navigation tests.

    Innovations and Contributions

Military and Aviation: During World War I, Wittnauer produced timepieces for American aviation units and was recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee for its high-precision watches.

The brand became synonymous with durability and functionality, appealing to explorers, navigators, and military
    personnel.

    Leadership:

After the death of the last Wittnauer brother in 1916, Martha Wittnauer became the first female CEO of a watch company, leading the brand until 1936.

Under her leadership, the company expanded its involvement in the aviation industry and sports.

    Later Developments

    Acquisition and Legacy:

In 1936, the Wittnauer family sold the company, and it became part of the Longines-Wittnauer Company.

Although the family was no longer involved, the brand continued to produce quality watches, maintaining its legacy in the watchmaking industry.

    Modern Era:

Today, Wittnauer watches are considered vintage collectibles, appreciated for their craftsmanship and historical significance.

The brand's commitment to quality and innovation has left a lasting impact on the American watch industry.

Wittnauer's history reflects the evolution of American watchmaking, showcasing the blend of Swiss
craftsmanship with American ingenuity, and its watches remain a testament to this rich heritage.
